Where Unilorin is invisible

Share of each faculty’s academic staff, as listed in the University Calendar, with at least one publication in the international research index. Low coverage does not mean low activity. It means the work is not reaching the databases that funders, collaborators and ranking bodies search.

This is the most actionable thing on the site.

The University Calendar lists 1,426 academic staff. 1,233 of them, about 86%, have at least one publication in the index under a University of Ilorin affiliation, but only 1,069 (75%) have three or more. The gap is largest in Arts, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Law and Social Sciences. A common cause, especially in the humanities and law, is work published in Nigerian journals that assign no DOI and are therefore invisible to every index and ranking body.

A second cause is name splitting. 1,066 researchers on this site were held in the index under two or more separate records, under different spellings, orders or initials of their name, each showing only part of their work; those records are combined here. An ORCID attached to every publication is what prevents that.

Three things narrow the gap, and each is something the university can act on. Staff can register an ORCID and attach their publications to it. Departments can favour journals that assign a DOI. And authors can write their affiliation consistently as University of Ilorin, since variant spellings match nothing at all. Each is measurable, and this page can track whether it improves.

    Notes on method

    Source
OpenAlex, an open index of published research, retrieved 26 September 2026. Figures cover every publication on which an author gave a University of Ilorin affiliation. The university record counts 23,510 works, of which 21,564 can be retrieved individually; those form the base for the open access share and for citations received each year.
    Who is staff
The academic staff list, with faculty, department and rank, is taken from the University of Ilorin Calendar 2024–2028, which lists 1,426 academic staff across 16 faculties and 114 departments. Every faculty and department figure on this site counts Calendar staff only. Nobody is placed in a faculty by guesswork.
    Matching
The index holds 13,639 name records carrying a Unilorin affiliation. Each staff member was matched to every record that could be them: names in any order, initials against full names (“A. G. Salaudeen” and “Ganiyu Adekunle Salaudeen”), run-together names and small misspellings. A match also has to fit: the record’s subjects must suit the department, a different ORCID rules a record out, and two different first names under the same initials are kept apart unless they share co-authors. Records that fail these checks are set aside for a person to review rather than guessed. 1,233 staff were matched, drawing together 3,214 records.
    Other researchers
Researchers not on the staff list appear in the directory, marked as such, when they have at least five Unilorin-affiliated publications and most of their work is Unilorin work (or at least a quarter of it, where the index lists Unilorin as their current institution). They include students, former staff, teaching-hospital clinicians and collaborators. Their work counts toward the university’s output, but they are not placed in any faculty. There are 659.
    Combined records
Publication and citation counts for a combined researcher are the sum of their records; the h-index and i10-index are the highest of them, not recalculated. 1,066 researchers are combined in this way, and each affected profile lists the names involved.
    Citations
Citation counts on individual pages are career totals and are labelled as such. Faculty and department figures scale each researcher’s citations to their Unilorin-affiliated share of output. Where a career total is dominated by papers without a Unilorin affiliation, typically large multi-author studies, the researcher’s figure is limited to the citations of the Unilorin papers on record and they are left out of citation rankings; their page says so. Citations received in a year count every citation made that year to any Unilorin paper.
    Comparison
Recent citation rate is OpenAlex’s two-year mean citedness: the average number of citations received in the last year by papers published in the two years before it. Growth compares annual publications in 2020 and 2025. All ten universities were measured on the same day from the same index.
    Years
Charts run from 2012 to the last complete year. The year in progress is excluded.
    Status
